ASSURe Training Program

The ASSURe Training Program is a structured educational initiative designed to equip participants with approaches to student in distress support. It emphasizes compassionate engagement, intersectional awareness, and systemic equity considerations to enhance the effectiveness of student services. The program blends theoretical learning with practical application, fostering skills essential for responding to students in distress.

Participation in the ASSURe program will roll over from Fall through Summer quarters, allowing participants the full academic year to complete the prescribed workshops. Workshops will be offered on a quarterly basis to provide flexibility in meeting program requirements.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Participants will:

  1. Explore compassionate approaches to student support, considering the impact of intersecting identities, histories of trauma, and systemic inequities on learning and success.
  2. Examine effective techniques for responding to students in distress.
  3. Learn how to incorporate student-centeredness within their workplace and student support environments.
  4. Develop self-care and resilience-building strategies for navigating distressing situations.

Program Structure

The ASSURe Training Program consists of the following components:

  • All participants must attend the core workshop of the program
  • Beyond the core workshop, participants must complete any additional four workshops from our available lineup
  • Participants are expected to complete a pre-assessment, post-assessment, and a post-session feedback form for each session. 
  • Completion of the workshops does not need to be done in a certain order

Upon completion, participants will receive a completion certificate and a memento.

The following are the workshops available for participants of the ASSURe program:

1. Core Workshop

  • Vignette analysis and role-playing exercises
  • Community guidelines and respectful curiosity
  • Trauma-informed approach: Definition and distinction from Trauma-Informed Care (TIC)
  • Case studies focusing on diverse student experiences
  • Resource navigation and self/community care strategies
  • Program structure and expectations

Our Core workshops are being determined and will be announced to participants in advance. This quarter we will be hosting at least two sessions synchronously, both in-person and virtually. 

2. Response Workshops

  • Creating Culture of Care Training by Student Affairs Case Management
    • This interactive training is designed to assist faculty and staff in recognizing and supporting students in distress. What is a Student In Distress? A student whose academic progress or functioning in the university environment is adversely affected due to a number of indicators that are impacting their well-being and/or the well-being of others. This is an excellent training for any UCSD staff or faculty member that has high interactions with UCSD students.

  • De-escalation Training by Center for Student Accountability, Growth, and Education (SAGE)
    • Have you ever wondered how you can prevent or ease difficult conversations or conflicts with others? From delivering feedback to addressing disgruntled individuals, knowing how to facilitate dialogue in ways that promote resolution and prevent escalation has become increasingly important. Using mediation and negotiation theory, learners will gain an understanding of active listening, interest identification, embodied empathy, and other “brain hacks,” as well as how to apply them to facilitate difficult conversations and resolve conflict.

  • Trauma-Informed Practice by CARE at the Sexual Assault Resource Center  
    • Have you found yourself wanting to deepen your empathy skills to better support others? In this workshop, participants will learn about what it means to be trauma-informed and how they can apply trauma-informed practices in their day-to-day work.

  • Compassion in Action: Supporting Students Through Mental Health Crises by Triton CORE
    • Students in distress may exhibit warning signs that indicate they need support, but knowing how to respond effectively can feel challenging. This interactive workshop will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to recognize when a student is in crisis, engage in compassionate and effective conversations, and connect them with the appropriate resources. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of self-care strategies for those supporting students in distress.

3. Population-Specific Applications

  • Transfer Ally Training with the Transfer Hub 
    • Within this self-paced training, learn about research-based transfer experiences and apply it to your unique role. Earn badges as you complete each module! Upon completion, you will be an "expert" in transfer student success and receive a certificate as well as your very own Triton Transfer Ally pin and e-sticker.
    • This training contains several modules, please expect a time commitment of 3.5 hours

  • Students with Dependents
    • This training will help UC San Diego staff understand the needs and challenges of students with dependents, including student parents, caregivers, and guardians. It will cover the resources available on and off campus, such as childcare, financial aid, housing, and academic support. Staff will also learn about relevant policies, ways to advocate for these students, and strategies to create a more supportive campus environment.

  • Undocumented Students by the Undocumented Student Center
    • This training is designed for UC San Diego faculty, staff, and student employees to build awareness and support for undocumented students. It covers key terms and concepts, Education Equity policies, available support systems in California, and the challenges undocumented students face. Participants will also learn what it means to be an "Undocu-Ally." The module includes two knowledge checks—one midway through and one at the end—to reinforce learning.

  • Supporting Military Connected Students by Student Veterans Resource Center
    • This training provides UC San Diego faculty and staff with an overview of military culture, common challenges faced by student veterans, and effective support strategies. It highlights the strengths of military-connected students and offers campus resources like peer mentorship, career development, and mental health support. The session includes real-life scenarios to build empathy and improve communication with this unique student population.

  • Building Our Brave Spaces by Cross Cultural Center
    • In this workshop, we will come together as a group to reflect on our values, deepen our connections, and collaboratively build a foundation for our community. Through the lens of brave spaces, we will set individual and group values, explore concepts of trust and vulnerability, and weave these ideas into our work moving forward.

4. Assessment and Evaluation

The follow surveys must be completed to finish the program:
  • Pre-Assessment Completion
    • You must complete this assessment before the 4 training workshops (can be done after Core workshop).
  • Post-Asssement Completion
    • This must be requested once you complete the 5 required workshops.
  • Post-Session Survey Completion
    • This will be sent after each workshop.

Faculty Staff Assistance Program

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) is a confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which helps campus* faculty and staff, all Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholars, UC San Diego emeriti and retirees resolve concerns affecting personal well-being and/or job performance.  Support for campus leaders, managers and supervisors; connections to local resources; and collaboration with HR units and other campus partners are also services provided by our team of licensed, professional counselors.
