Letter From
VICE CHANCELLOR PENNY RUE
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Student Affairs Newsletter! I am
excited to be a part of this new project, a collaborative effort from colleagues
throughout Student Affairs. I hope that this new collaboration increases the
openness and collective pride in our people, our dedicated work on behalf of
UC San Diego, and our current and prospective students.
Many people have asked me to share my perspectives about UCSD and Student
Affairs since arriving one year ago. I have found a welcoming attitude, dedicated
professionals, an innovative spirit and many partnerships. As we begin another
academic year, I am happy to share my thoughts.

MIND, BODY, SPIRIT: NEW WELLNESS CENTER TO ADDRESS NEEDS OF THE 'WHOLE' STUDENT
AT UCSD
Student Affairs is implementing sweeping changes to the way it provides services
that address the physical, mental and spiritual needs of its undergraduates.
In a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to student wellness, such services
will now be consolidated under one departmental cluster, and within the next
few years, under one roof on campus.
Known as the Student Affairs Wellness Initiative, the changes are occurring
in two stages. The first is the consolidation of Counseling and Psychological
Services (CAPS), Campus Recreation, Student Health Services, and potentially
the Center for Ethics and Spirituality, bringing them together collaboratively
under one Assistant Vice Chancellor, allowing students to more effectively receive
wellness services that address their psychological, emotional, physical and spiritual
needs.

COLLEGE OF THE OVERWHELMED:
The Campus Mental Health Crisis and What to Do
About It
In 2007, the mass shooting at Virginia Tech put the subject of student mental
health squarely on the national landscape. On campuses, however, the topic emerged
as a significant concern well before then. One book that sounded the alarm is College
of the Overwhelmed. Published in 2004 and authored by Richard Kadison, the
chief of mental health services at Harvard University, and Theresa Foy Digeronimo,
the book presents in clear language the conditions that gave rise to the mental
health crisis on campuses and what colleges, parents, and students can do about
it.

Resources That Build Our Expertise
We all read great books, articles, and online content that help us serve our
students more effectively. Here are some “must reads” from our colleagues in
Student Affairs.
BOOKS
Heads-Up Baseball: Playing the Game One Pitch at a Time
by Ken Ravizza
and Tom Hanson
Baseball players have to cope with failing a large percentage of the time,
so the mental aspect of the game is very important. The authors teach us that
mental skills, like physical skills, can be taught.
Recommended by Women’s Volleyball Coach, Tom Black
Re-Imagine: Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age
by Tom Peters
From Peter’s theory regarding the death of bureaucracy to his stance that
“business is cool,” we are invited to think beautiful, think weird, and embrace
even more change than we can imagine.
Recommended by Warren College Dean of Student Affairs, Paul DeWine
The Last Lecture
by Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow
When a Carnegie Mellon professor was asked to give his last lecture, he didn’t
have to imagine it as his last since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal
cancer. The lecture he gave was not about dying but about overcoming obstacles,
supporting the dreams of others, and seizing every moment.

ARTICLES
Making Invisible Work Visible: Using Social Network Analysis to Support
Strategic Collaboration
by Rob Cross, Andrew Parker, and Stephen P. Borgatti
Social Networking is a fascinating area of organizational development. As
the way our society communicates becomes increasingly non-linear, so are our
organizations.
Recommended by Muir College Dean of Student Affairs, Patty Mahaffey
Freedom and Responsibility: Teaching Critical Thinking Skills to Facebook
Users
by M. Leslie Sadler
Facebook and other social networking websites continue to impact the lives
of an increasing number of college students every day. Teaching students to critically
examine their relationship with technology will help them find their independence
in a digitally-connected tomorrow.
Recommended by Jenelle Dean, Sixth College Coordinator of Student Activities
Assessing the Campus Climate for Gay, Lesbian,
Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Students Using a Multiple Perspectives Approach
by Robert D. Brown,
Brandy Clarke, Valerie Gortmaker, and Rachael Robinson-Keilig
This study suggests that perceptions of campus climate for GLBT students differ
depending on one’s place in the campus community and, therefore, strategies for
improving campus climate should be designed with particular populations in mind.

College Board Report on Asian Americans
published by the College
Board
The popular image of Asian-Americans as academically successful ignores the
tremendous amount of variation among different subsets.

The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need
by Daniel

In Memoriam
On July 5, 2008 Student Educational Advancement lost a young and talented
employee, Crystal Roberts Mesa. Our sympathies are extended to the Roberts Mesa
family and the staff in Student Educational Advancement.
Staff Kudos
Kevin Messey, Intercollegiate Athletics Head Trainer; Matt
Kritz, former Strength
and Conditioning Coach; Rob Mamula, current Strength and Conditioning
Coach; and Matt Hobbs, Head Pitching Coach Triton Baseball,
have recently published an article in the Strength and Conditioning Journal.
The article,
“In-season Strength and Conditioning Program for Collegiate Baseball Pitchers:
A Unified Approach” documents the successful program at UCSD that has helped
prevent career ending surgical procedures in student-athletes and allowed them
to compete at higher levels.
University Centers Marketing (Sharon Van Bruggen, Alfredo
Villareal, Stephen Sun) was recognized by the Association
of College Unions International (ACUI) in their “Steal this Idea Marketing
Competition.”
First, second, and third places honors were given in the categories of Brand
Identity, T-shirt Design, and One Color Poster.
UCSD was the top-ranked Division II school and earned a No. 20 national ranking
overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association's (NCSA) 2008 Collegiate
Power Rankings. The Power Rankings rate colleges and universities comprehensively
based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess
of the university. The institutions posted in the 2008 Power Rankings are in
an elite group of less than 6 percenet of colleges and universities across the
nation. Kudos to the Athletics staff for their hard work!
Recreation swimming coach Ron “Sickie” Marcikic and
the department’s Masters
program are featured in the latest edition of The Del Mar
Scene.
Renee Barnett Terry received Southern Connecticut University’s Alumni Citation
Award, which honors graduates for extraordinary achievements in their field.
